Perched in the northernmost fringes of the US, Montana is an incredible state to explore. It’s the kind of state that’s got a little something for every traveller, especially if you love the great outdoors. Not only that, there are so many of the best places to see in Montana that are perched all over the state.

This makes it one of the best US states to visit on a road trip, especially if you’re already in the wider northerly area of the US. After all, you can include a trip to Montana as part of a visit to Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming and even following the Rockies towards Alberta in Canada. 

Though, don’t think you need to be a pro skier or hiker to enjoy Montana. There’s also a heap of smaller cities that are well worth a visit whilst you’re driving around the state. 

Take a look, below, at the best places to see in Montana when you visit. After all, you don’t want to travel all that way and miss some of the top places. Have fun! 

1.) Big Sky Resort

Big Sky is one of the most famous and largest winter resorts in all the United States. Not just that, it’s situated within the southwesterly fringes of Montana and around 50 miles from Yellowstone International Airport (Bozeman).

With almost 6,000 acres of skiable terrain and the most beautiful pistes, it’s the kind of place that’s well worth visiting if you’re an avid skier. Though, don’t fret if you’re not a pro! There are a range of slopes at Big Sky that are suited to all abilities. Honestly, it’s huge and you can easily spend 2-3 days and not even come close to ‘completing’ it. 

Now, daily lift passes (that you can grab here) can be a little on the pricier side, so make sure to plan your days well to maximise your time on the slopes before booking any tickets. 

Also, don’t forget that Big Sky is not just a resort for winter activities. In the warmer summer months, you can head out on activities like horseback riding, swimming, and zip-lining which are so much fun.

2.) Bozeman

Yes, Bozeman might be relatively small in comparison to other cities in the US, but it’s well worth a visit when you’re in the area. 

Around a 1 hour drive from Big Sky, Bozeman is a great city to visit for an overnight stay after skiing. You see, it’s got a heap of restaurants and museums that make it really fun; especially if you’re visiting with the family.

Once here, make sure to check out the Museum of the Rockies. Now, don’t be fooled, the museum does not just showcase prehistoric artefacts and paleontological collections, but it also comes with a variety of sections that are so incredible to see. The Japanese woodblock prints exhibit is fairly popular as well as the numerous Native American exhibits.

Afterwards, head to downtown Bozeman and explore the Gallatin History Museum. It’s a little smaller than the Museum of the Rockies, but well worth visiting if you’re interested in the history of battles in Montana. 

Finally, head over to Jam! for their epic brunches. Their eggs benedict and biscuits are so tasty. Though, just be aware, it does get busy on weekends, so be prepared for a wait.

3.) Earthquake Lake

Popularly known as the Quake Lake, Earthquake Lake was created after a massive earthquake struck back in 1959. Perched just west of Yellowstone National Park, it’s well worth making a visit whilst exploring the wider area, especially when driving Jackson Road (Highway 287).

It’s easily one of the best places to see in Montana and well worth taking a drive through this area. 

That being said, if you fancy stretching your legs, then join the Refuge Point hiking trail. It’s a totally gorgeous way to explore more of the area around Boat Mountain and Quake Lake itself.

4.) Glacier National Park

For me, Glacier National Park is a must-see when visiting Montana.

In fact, I’d go as far as saying that it’s one of the best national parks in the US to visit. The whole landscape is absolutely incredible to see.

Surrounded by ancient forests, glacial valleys and carved mountains and lakes, it’s the kind of place that acts as a ‘timestamp’ of geological processes in the region.

You see, you can easily head between valleys that were carved by vast glaciers, or head around the lakes that were formed over thousands of years of glacial melt. 

Now, a heads up, Glacier National Park is huge! This means you’ll never really see it all, but you can certainly make a good attempt. 

As you drive around the park, make sure to stop off at Grinnell Glacier which is incredible to see. You can drive lots of the area around Glacier Route 1 road; but be aware, that it’s closed in winter.

If it’s a hike you’re after, make sure you prep and you’re a keen and advanced hiker. You see, the hike to Grinnell Glacier is challenging to say the least. If you are considering this hike, the Garden Wall Trail will be best.

This will get you right to the top, overlooking Grinnell Glacier itself. 

Alternatively, join the Grinnell Glacier Trailhead which will take you past Lake Josephine, too. 

Staying for a few days? Make sure to also visit Swiftcurrent Lake in Glacier National Park. It’s easily reached by road and the views from here are stunning.

5.) Little Bighorn Battlefield

If you’re interested in the battles that happened in Montana, then make sure to visit Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument.

It is a memorial ground for the United States Army’s 7^th Cavalry and the Native Americans. Here, you’ll get to learn more about the history that led to this infamous battle at this very site. It’s one of the country’s most well-known battles and it’s well worth learning more on a visit here. 

From an international perspective, I can’t say I knew much about Little Bighorn Battlefield; but it’s well worth a visit when driving through Montana.

6.) West Yellowstone

Not too far from Yellowstone Airport, the Grizzly and Wolf Discovery Center is one of the best places to see in Montana when visiting West Yellowstone itself. 

Open all year round, Grizzly & Wolf Discovery Center is a perfect stop to just stretch your legs and explore this not-for-profit centre. It’s incredible and you’ll get to see grizzly bears, wolves and otters that can no longer be released into the wild or are temporarily housed while they heal or orphans. 

Their work is invaluable in the area and is such a lovely place to visit. Just be sure to give yourself around 90 minutes to fully enjoy the experience. 

Afterwards, head on over to Running Bear Pancake House for some of the world-class pancakes. Also, make sure to try one of their homemade cinnamon rolls. They’re incredible.

7.) Lewis and Clark State Park

Lewis and Clark State Park is the oldest in all of  Montana and is located outside Three Forks. This makes it one of the best places in Montana to visit whilst driving west from Boseman towards Glacier National Park. 

Once here, make sure to explore the incredible caverns on a guided tour and follow some of the gorgeous hiking trails from the cavern’s visitor centre. 

The Middle View Trail is a great one to stroll, but the Greer Gulch Loop Trail can be a little more accessible if you’re short on time.

8.) Great Falls

Located at the centre of Montana, Great Falls is a city that’s well worth stopping for an overnight stay.

Known locally as Electric City, Great Falls (due to the energy it produces) has heaps of restaurants, bars and a downtown area that are well worth a gander.

Once here, make sure to check out the Children’s Museum of Montana. It’s so cute and the exhibitions are a throwback that is lovely to see. Oh, and stop by Tracy’s for the best chicken and waffles in town. 

If you’ve got time, also head over to Malmstrom Museum and Air Park. This is a great place to stop if you’re interested in military history and well worth a visit for a few hours whilst in Great Falls.

9.) Billings

If you want to slow down a little on your trip to Montana, then make sure to head over to Billings. You see, it’s got heaps to do and a great stopping point if you’re heading east to North Dakota. 

Once here, head over to Moss Mansion Museum to take a tour inside the home that’s over 100 years old. It’s really incredible to see and the historical artefacts inside are priceless. Just be sure to check opening times; Moss Mansion Museum does close during some of the colder months.

Also, don’t forget to visit the Yellowstone Art Museum, too. It’s a great place to explore both contemporary and historic exhibits. We loved it and it’s well worth visiting for a 45-minute trip. Though, a heads up, if you’re not an overly keen art fan, then you might want to give this one a miss.

10.) Helena

Being the capital of the state, Helena is one of the best places in Montana you have to visit.

Now, it’s not as big as other US cities like New York but that doesn’t mean it’s not worth staying a night or two. There are heaps of things to do when you arrive in the city.

Once here, make sure to explore the area around the Montana State Capitol which is stunning. 

Fancy a hike from the city? Then head around the trails of Mount Helena. These are pretty accessible in the summer months and you can get some great views from up here. 

Oh, and don’t forget to pop into Steve’s Cafe for their hearty breakfasts. It’s an unfussy place that’s all about the food. Just be sure to try their ‘big bird’ sandwich. It’s huge and delicious. 

11.) Hamilton

Not too far from the border with Idaho, Hamilton is one of the best places in Montana to visit as you travel via Highway 93 to Idaho. 

Now, this is the kind of town you can visit for a few hours (you don’t need to spend any longer). That being said, you can use it as a base to explore some of the nearby peaks that mark the state border. 

Once here, be sure to check out the Daly Mansion. It was once the home of Copper King Marcus Daly who founded Hamilton. Inside, you’ll get to explore the building and learn more about the establishment of Hamilton. 

Oh, and for one of the best brews in Montana, head to Big Creek Coffee Roasters. Their coffee is some of the best in the state.

If you love pork tenderloin sandwiches, rocky mountain oysters, mouth-watering steak and of course corn, then Nebraska is the place for you.  It’s a foodie state, for sure, but it’s also absolutely gorgeous to explore. This all being said, it can be tough to decide on which of the best places in Nebraska to visit once you arrive. 

Whether you’re visiting on a dedicated trip, or as part of a wider road trip across the US, Nebraska is well worth spending some time exploring. Even if you’re driving through on Highway 80, you can still see quite a few of the top places in Nebraska that are relatively close by.

So, to help you get the most out of your trip to Nebraska, I’m sharing our top places you don’t want to miss. Have an amazing time visiting the US. 

1.) Scotts Bluff National Monument 

Around 800 feet in height, Scotts Bluff is one of the best places in Nebraska you have to visit. In fact, it’s one of the state’s most iconic natural sights and a stunning place to see. 

Now, it’s best to explore Scotts Bluff National Monument as we venture west, over to Wyoming. You see, it’s relatively close to the western border of Nebraska and easy to visit whilst on a longer drive. 

The site is well worth visiting, especially as it’s served as a landmark for emigrants heading west across the Great Plains of Nebraska.

Once here, make sure to follow the trails to spot Eagle Rock and see some of the iconic Conestoga Wagons on the prairie itself. It’s a wonderful place to explore and well worth visiting for an hour or two.

2.) Alliance

Nestled within the Great Plains of Nebraska, Alliance is a relatively small city that’s perfect for an afternoon trip.

Now, like I said, the city of Alliance is small but you can easily stay overnight to explore this eclectic little city and use it as a base to explore the wider Great Plains area of Nebraska.

Once in the city, make sure to visit the Alliance Knight Museum which shares the history of settlers and American Indian histories from around the area. It’s free to enter and a visit will take around 30 minutes. 

For lunch, be sure to grab a table at Ken and Dale’s. They serve up a tasty brisket and creamy mashed potatoes that are so yummy. 

Also, don’t forget you’ve got one of Nebraska’s most iconic art installations closely, entitled ‘Carhenge‘. Think of it as a modern take on Stonehenge in England. It’s a wonderful place to see, just out of Alliance, located in the Sandhills.

Honestly, it’s in the middle of a wide-open field, making it very hard to miss.

3.) Cowboy Trail

The Cowboy Trail is one of the longest trails in Nebraska, spanning around 195 miles between Valentine and Norfolk. It’s one of the best places in Nebraska to visit if you want to hike or ramble in this beautiful state.

Now, don’t get too daunted, you don’t have to walk the whole 195 miles! Choose parts of the trails and take sections during your trip to Nebraska. This way, you can see everything you want, without wasting lots of time on spots you’re not too bothered about. 

One thing to note, there are very few restrooms along the trail, especially in some sections. So plan your pee breaks wisely. Now, we love the newer sections between Valentine and Norfolk. However, like I said, choose the sections you like most.

4.) Omaha

Not too far from the Iowa state border, Omaha is one of the best places in Nebraska to visit when driving Highway 80. It’s one of the largest cities in Nebraska and you can easily spend a few days exploring the city itself. 

After arriving, make sure to stop by the Old Market neighbourhood. Contrary to its ‘old’ name, this area is as young as it gets. The neighbourhood surrounding is filled with heaps to see and do. Make sure to take a stroll around Gene Leahy Mall or Conagra Lake. It’s a stunning park in the city and well worth visiting on a sunny day.

Afterwards, head over to Lauritzen Gardens for the gorgeous botanic gardens and make a stop at the Durham Museum, too. The latter is built within a former railroad station that has been renovated into a museum which you can visit all year round. Once inside, you’ll be able to explore heaps of exhibitions including; Pulitzer Prize photographs, the Trans Mississippi Exposition and so much more.

For a tasty brew, head over to Upstream Brewing Company which serves local ales and some proper pub grub, too. Their pork chops are delicious. Alternatively, if you prefer seafood for dinner, then head over to Plank Seafood Provisions. Their lobster rolls are so good.

5.) Lincoln

The capital of Nebraska, Lincoln is well worth visiting as you head further west beyond Omaha. You see, it’s perfectly situated on Highway 80 and a great spot for an overnight stay.

Once here, make sure to check out the State Capitol that’s almost 100 years old. Best of all, you can join free guided tours that start at the North Entrance of the State Capitol (on the second floor). There are tours, on the hour on most days.

Afterwards, head over to the Museum of American Speed which is on the fringes of Lincoln. It’s an incredible museum to visit if you’re a fan of automotive history. Visits will take around 90 minutes and it’s so incredible. 

If you love American Football, head over to the Memorial Stadium that’s been around for over 100 years. The energy is incredible and it’s well worth getting tickets if you’re staying in Lincoln for a few days. 

Getting hungry? Head over to Yia Yia’s for one of their yummy pizza slices. Their buffalo pizza is everything.

6.) Court and Jail house Rock

Not too far from the town of Bridgeport, Court and Jailhouse Rock is a lovely area to visit as you want to stretch your legs and head out hiking in Nebraska. 

You see, for hundreds of years, these rocks acted as a landmark for pioneers who would cross the Great Plains. Nowadays, the area has a heap of different trails 

However, one thing to remember; take plenty of water, sunblock and snacks with you. There is very little in terms of facilities once you arrive. 

7.) Ashland

Ashland is one of the best places in Nebraska to visit when driving between Omaha and Lincoln. You see, you’ll be able to stop off at the Holy Family Shrine (just outside Ashland) to see one of the most unique churches in the state. It’s beautiful and well worth visiting for a peaceful stroll. 

Afterwards, head on over to the Strategic Air and Space Museum. It is home to some of the most extensive collections of Cold War aircraft and artefacts. It was first opened in 1959 and was just a strategic air command. Nowadays, the museum has flourished in size and you can see so many incredible pieces of history here.

Just make sure to give yourself at least two hours to see it all. 

8.) McConaughy Lake

Just off Highway 80, McConaughy Lake is a great stopping place for an afternoon trip in Nebraska. 

Now, McConaughy Lake is perfect if you fancy a little chilled time while visiting Nebraska. After arriving, you’ll be able to head out boating or on jet skis (from Big Mac Marina) that are so much fun. Not only that, it’s the perfect place to camp or park your RV if you’re planning on spending more time in the wider area. 

Just make sure to arrive with a picnic and snacks; there’s not too much in terms of restaurants once you arrive.

9.) Smith Falls State Park

Home to the tallest waterfall in Nebraska, Smith Falls is one stunning spot you have to visit when exploring the northerly fringes of Nebraska. 

You can easily spend a few hours walking around, and the views of Smith Falls are just beautiful. Best of all, lots of the paths are accessible. This makes it easier to visit, even if you have reduced mobility. 

It’s so worth visiting; though make sure to pack some bug spray in the summer months. You will get bitten. 

10.) Nebraska National Forest

Not too far from the town of Chadron, Nebraska National Forest is incredible to visit if you love the great outdoors. You see, it encompasses well over 200 square miles of forest, with heaps of trails to hike. 

Not only that, you can easily visit Chadron State Park that’s right next door to the Nebraska National Forest area. 

Just be sure to give yourself at least a few days to truly slow down and explore this unspoilt natural region of Nebraska. The landscapes are stunning.

11.) Fort Kearny State Historical Park

If you’re interested in pioneer history, then you’ll want to visit Fort Kearny State Historical Park. Once here, you’ll get to learn all about the Oregon Trail and how many settlers passed through this area on their journey west. 

Visits will take around 50 minutes and it’s so easy to stop as you drive along Highway 80.

12.) North Platte

For a great day trip in Nebraska, head over to the city of North Platte. Although relatively small, you’ll get to explore the Buffalo Bill Ranch. This was the very ranch where Buffalo Bill owned. Nowadays, you can head inside and explore which is well worth doing if you’re interested in the life of Buffalo Bill. 

Afterwards, head over to the historic Canteen District. From here, you’ll be able to hop into some of the local cafes, bars and independent stores that line the streets. We loved Good Life on the Bricks, which is something of an institution in Nebraska.

It’s a totally unfussy spot for lunch and they serve up the tastiest brisket and mac and cheese around.

1. Coronado Island Marriott Pickleball Courts

Fee: $8-26

Coronado Island Marriott Resort and Spa had our favorite pickleball courts of the four courts we checked out. The views and facilities were beautiful, and Esther loved that you could get food and drinks delivered to you on the court. It wouldn’t have taken me a year to convince her to play if all courts had that.

They book courts for 2-hour time slots starting on the even hour, and it’s available to guests and the public. They also have $8 open play on Mondays and Thursdays from 8 AM to 12 PM and Wednesdays and Fridays from 2 PM to 6 PM.

There are seating areas with overhangs, and you can also take lessons. I’ve read reviews that on windy days, some of the courts are in the middle of a wind tunnel, but haven’t experienced that ourselves.

Local Tip: Mondays are the most consistently busy if you want to jump in on open play. When arriving, you will park in the gated area and enter through the Wellness Center. Bring your ticket to validate it for two hours of free parking, or you can find free street parking.

Merida is an incredible city in Mexico to visit. Nestled on the Yucatan Peninsular, around 3-4 hours west of Cancun, Merida is gorgeous, with heaps of restaurants, historic buildings and stunning neighbourhoods to visit. Honestly, there are heaps of the best things to do in Merida that will fill any trip to the city.

However, with so much choice, comes some tough decisions! After all, you want to make the most out of your visit to Merida and not waste any time once you’ve arrived.

We absolutely loved our time in Merida and we’d go back in a heartbeat. In fact, I’d go as far as saying that it’s my favourite city in all of Mexico.

So, to help you get the most out of your trip, I’m sharing the top things to do in Merida when you visit.

1.) Cathedral of Mérida

Situated right within the heart of the historic centre, the Cathedral of Mérida is one spot you don’t want to miss whilst strolling the city. Not only is it totally gorgeous, but it also has a history that dates back to the 1500s. This, alone, makes the Cathedral of Mérida one of the oldest cathedrals on the continent.

Now, the cathedral is incredible to visit, and you can head inside for free to explore the cathedral. Now, like lots of sites in modern-day Mexico, cathedrals are often trampled over and attempted to suppress local Mayan culture by the Spanish.

Their building was often an attempt to ‘convert’ locals to Catholicism; regularly at the expense of local culture and religious beliefs. In fact, the cathedral was even built using the stones from the Maya Temple that once stood in its place.

That all being said, the site is one spot you can’t miss in Merida, especially as it’s stood for almost 500 years.

Oh, and don’t forget to head outside the cathedral every Saturday at 8 pm every week.

The roads around the plaza are closed and you’ll get to witness a reenactment of the Maya Ballgame that was once integral to Maya culture. It’s all for free, so expect crowds and arrive about 25 minutes early if you want to be at the front.

2.) Plaza Grande

If you’re already at Merida Cathedral, you will easily stop by Plaza Grande (that’s right outside). Now, the plaza itself is one of the busiest areas of Merida city centre, which makes it a great place to explore on foot.

In fact, the wider historic centre of Merida is perfect to explore on foot. Not only are there heaps of restaurants, cafes and bars, but the city of Merida is also pretty safe.

It’s one of the safest cities in Mexico to visit. This means you don’t need a guide when strolling the city and you can easily pinpoint places on Google Maps to walk between.

Once here, make sure to stroll down Pasaje de La Revolución and head into the Palacio de Gobierno del Estado de Yucatán. The latter has been in the plaza since the 1800s and there are some incredible murals to see inside.

3.) Merida Hotels

For us, a good hotel can make a trip to a new city; and we stayed in some gems in Merida that we totally loved.

Casa Olivia is a small ‘casa’ of about 4 rooms. It’s totally quaint and the whole property is totally beautiful and the team are so welcoming. Not only that, they have the most gorgeous pool in the centre of the Casa. It’s like an oasis in the heart of Merida and we loved it.

Now, Casa Olivia is a little on the pricier side when it comes to hotels in Merida; but it was well worth it for the experience.

Another gem in the city is Decu Merida. It’s another smaller style hotel (with less than 10 rooms) which is totally beautiful. Just like Casa Olivia, it has its own courtyard and outdoor pool that really feels like a secret garden in the city.

Now, within Decu Merida, you’ll get to choose rooms in the historic ‘casa’ part of the hotel, or the newer part of the hotel. Both are gorgeous, and your choice really does come down to the kind of style you like.

Oh, and don’t forget, they have their own little speakeasy that’s hidden behind the bookshelves.

4.) Museo Casa Montejo

Just on the fringes of Plaza Grande, Museo Casa Montejo is a museum that still houses some of the furniture and pieces dating back from the 1500s.

It’s easily one of the best things to do in Merida to get a feel of the Spanish influence in the city. Plus, it’s free to wander around and the rooms are just gorgeous.

Visits take around 25 minutes and they even have art exhibits that change seasonally. Heads up, there’s not much information in English, so make sure to brush up on your Spanish if you want to learn more about each of the exhibits whilst you’re there.

5.) Restaurants in Merida

Merida is such a foodie city. In fact, I’d go as far as saying it’s one of my favourite cities in all of Mexico for its restaurants. It’s got that perfect mix of regional cuisine, but also really cool places that are all within walking distance around the city centre.

Now, for live music and hearty Mexican food, head over to La Nagrita Cantina. It’s a lively spot that’s well-known in Merida. We absolutely loved it here and the cocktails are really good.

Just be sure to arrive early in the evening if you want to be sat near the stage for live music. La Nagrita Cantina fills up really quick.

Alternatively, head on over to Holoch which has inside and outside dining options that are so good. We loved this spot for dinner and their frijol con puerco (Yucatan Style Black Beans with Pork) is so tasty.

Though, you should reserve a table if you’re going for dinner. We struggled to get a seat on our first visit.

If you want a cool vibe for dinner and drinks, then head over to Vana. This was one of our favourite places in Merida and was filled with locals and visitors alike.

Staying longer in Merida? Then, don’t forget to visit Dzalbay (for its live music), Café Riqueza (for its coffee) and Bird for drinks (that’s near Decu Merida).

6.) Chichen Itza

Around a two-hour drive from Merida, Chichen Itza is a day trip you have to take when visiting Merida. You see, it’s one of the world’s most important Maya sites.

Once here, you’ll get to walk around the Temple of Kukulcán (El Castillo) which is iconic. Like lots of Maya sites, you won’t be able to climb the pyramids – which I love. After all, we want to preserve them for as long as possible.

Oh, and don’t forget that you’ll get to walk through the ball courts that were played thousands of years ago.

Now, to make things easier, book this guided tour of Chichen Itza. Not only will you get a qualified guide to take you around Chichen Itza, but you’ll also get picked up from the centre of Merida. This makes it all so easy.

Just be sure to book your tickets before arriving in Merida. Spaces can sell out fast at peak times.

7.) Uxmal

Another one of Mexico’s UNESCO World Heritage Sites, Uxmal is around 60 miles from the centre of Merida.

Long ago, Uxmal was a vibrant trading city for the Maya people and houses so many buildings that you can still see to this day. Just like Chichen Itza, you can book this day trip from Merida which will take you all around Uxmal.

Once here, be sure to stroll around the Pyramid of the Magician, stroll through the Governor’s Palace and visit the Quadrangle. It’s so impressive to see and one of the best things to do in Merida if you want to explore the region’s Mayan history.

Now, a visit to Uxmal (once you’ve arrived) will take around 2-4 hours, so plan ahead, especially on very hot days.

You see, there is very little in terms of shade and it can get very hot. Take cold water around on your walk and make sure to slap on that sunscreen.

8.) Hacienda Mucuyché Cenote

Now, for a totally unique cenote in Mexico, head to Hacienda Mucuyché. It’s not too far from Uxmal (about 40 minutes away) and well worth combining with a trip there.

Now, what makes this cenote so special is that it’s also at the site of a historic hacienda that you can tour before hopping into the water. Though, just a heads up, you will need to book this Hacienda Mucuyché guided tour before arriving.

This does need to be arranged before turning up as some tours are all in Spanish or all in English.

After touring the grounds of Hacienda Mucuyché, you’ll get to jump into the cenotes itself. The team supply mandatory life jackets and lifeguards that follow your progress whilst there. We loved that, as we’ve been to some cenotes where there is very little in terms of safety precautions.

9.) Mayan World Museum of Mérida

On the outskirts of Merida is the Mayan World Museum, a hub that shines a light on Maya culture and history that is well worth a visit.

In fact, I’d go as far as saying that it’s one of the best things to do in Merida to learn more about Maya history and the effects of Spanish colonialism.

Now, you do pay a small fee to enter (around $10 USD) and you’ll likely spend around 90 minutes looking around and learning the history of the Maya people.

10.) Palacio de la Música

Around a 5-minute walk from Plaza Grande, Palacio de la Música is well worth visiting if you want to learn more about Mexican music and the history of music from the wider Yucatan Peninsular.

Now, the museum itself is really good but I would say that it can feel a little less exciting if you’re not really interested in musical history. If that’s you, maybe give this spot a miss when visiting Merida.

11.) Paseo de Montejo

Probably one of Merida’s most famous streets, Paseo de Montejo is as grand as it is long. In fact, it’s got some of the grandest buildings in all of Merida and is well worth taking a stroll down the avenue whilst visiting Merida.

Once here, start off at the Monument to the Fatherland and head south down Paseo de Montejo. As you stroll, you’ll get to stop by Casas Gemelas, the museums like Quinta Montes Molina and Palacio Cantón.

In some cases, you can head inside the houses which are now museums. Plus, others are still accessible with guided tours. Just make sure to give yourselves around 3 hours to stroll the avenue and stop by some of the impressive mansions.

Afterwards, stroll on over to Parroquia Santa Ana, which is a stunning Catholic Church that’s about a 10-minute walk from Paseo de Montejo itself. Along the way, you’ll be able to stop off at El Barrio, an unfussy lunch spot, that serves up some tasty Chilaquiles and horchata.

12.) Celestun

Fancy a trip to the coastline? Then book this tour to Celestun to explore the beautiful shores of the Yucatan Peninsular.

Once here, you’ll get to explore the wider Ria Celestún Biosphere Reserve and even spot some of the resident pink flamingos.

Not only that, you’ll get to board a boat and tour the reserve to get up close and personal with the flamingos. It’s one of the best things to do in Merida for a day trip, especially as it’s one of the most important areas for flamingoes north of the equator.

The next day at The Retreat at The Blue Lagoon, we started off with a relaxing swim, then breakfast and a determination to hike to the amazing viewpoint of the newly erupting Meradalir volcano.

If you remember in this post here we had actually done this hike but ended up at a not-so-ideal viewpoint of the volcano.

We had then tried to do this hike on the correct path the next day and the change in weather meant that the authorities had to close the volcano hike path.

Well today, from the news online, it seemed like the hiking path was open and the weather looked absolutely fine for it.

So with that, we had an early lunch and went down to the supermarket to stock up on supplies for the hike.

This time, we kinda overdid it with the snacks, unlike the first time when I didn’t think to even bring water with me because I assumed the hike was just a short thing.

Thankfully Lloyd did bring water with him that time but neither of us packed snacks.

So yeah, all stocked up we made our way over to the correct parking lot for the hike and began our ascent towards the volcano.

Now this hike was tricky but not in the ways I was expecting.

It starts off with a relatively quick uphill climb but it’s nowhere near as steep as the other route.

This then zig-zags till you get to the top of the mountain and this is the part that is actually a lot harder even though it’s flat.

See, this entire path is littered with huge rocks that have been blown here from previous volcanic eruptions and it’s mentally exhausting trying to walk through this and attempt not to fall.

Initially, it all seems okay but then the structure gets trickier the further in you go and although active work was being done to create a path here by the government, it hadn’t really gotten this far.

The view is amazing though as you go along and thanks to the rain, you can see the previous lava flow just steaming in the distance as you walk past. It’s a bit surreal.

Eventually, this rocky area gives way to more even terrain and then a bit more uphill climbs and then several downhill climbs and before you know it, there the volcano is in front of you but still in the distance.

This last part of the climb is a bit muddy and actually when you kinda wish it had those rocks from earlier on so you don’t go slipping down the hill.

Once you’re done with this, it’s an easy stretch to this viewpoint overlooking the volcano.

At this point, we were just so grateful that we were stubborn with our decision to come back here because the view of the volcano from here is exactly what we saw in the news and the reason we did the first hike, to begin with.

It’s so surreal to see, especially with all that lava that you know is pretty much hard earth just flowing like water.

And then there’s the sound.

It’s just this strange mix of loud humming and consistent rumbling.

After taking a moment or two to take it all in, we then decide to descend into the valley to the edge of the lava flow.

It is important to note that the Icelandic government’s safety officials were here monitoring things, especially the gas levels from the volcano so there were people looking out for safety on that front.

Randomly, and I don’t know how advisable this is, some people showed up with fish that they then proceeded to roast using the heat from the lava flow.

As it started to get a little dark, and by the way, it mostly got dark because of the cloud cover, not because the sun was fully setting, you started to see part of the lava field glow and could see a lot clearer how the molten lava was making its way around the valley from the volcano eruption.

It was incredible!

We ended up spending a lot longer here than we initially planned before deciding well past midnight that we should probably start heading back to the car.

Our flight back home was just in a few hours and we hadn’t even checked into the hotel we’d be spending the night in.

And so we began that walk back but thanks to the cloud cover it was dark and the fog had arrived too.

It was an ‘adventure’, to say the least, trying to get back in those conditions but the adrenaline and excitement we still had from just having witnessed that incredible sight of the volcano was more than enough to carry us through the whole hike.

And of course, once you get past those rocky bits in the mountains.

The rest is pretty easy!

4. Stonington Island

Highlights: East Base of the United States Antarctic Service Expedition, British Antarctic Survey’s Station E, Huge Ice Shelf, Helicopter Tour, Polar Plunge
Wildlife Spotting: Skuas, Various Seals, Various Whales

Stonington Island was the first chance for us to see an American Base. One of the unique features here is the two out-of-commission tanks they brought down as a mode of transportation (‘Murica!). There’s also Station E here, but it wasn’t open. Across the way, you can admire a giant ice shelf where some guests saw a big ice calving.

Afterward, we did a helicopter tour to appreciate the landscape and vastness from a bird’s-eye view. We even saw some whales.

Finally, conditions were perfect for a polar plunge. Luckily, it was a rare warm, sunny day to ease us into polar plunges. After setting up, we headed to the back of the ship, where they tied a safety belt on you before jumping in the water.

Once you get out, they have towels ready to wrap you and a choice of a shot or hot chocolate to warm yourself. The anticipation of jumping in was worse than actually doing it, plus I swam so fast that my brain didn’t have time to process what just happened.

Pro Tip: Wear robes over your bathing suit during the polar plunge. It keeps you warm while waiting, and it’s nice to throw back on after.

Buenos Aires is an incredible city to visit in Argentina. Nestled on the eastern fringes of the country, it’s a city that’s got a little something for every type of traveller. There is so much to see and do. That being said, it can be hard to whittle down a list of the best things to do in Buenos Aires, especially if you’re in the city for a few days.

Over the years, we’ve visited Buenos Aires many times and absolutely love it. We first visited alongside our wider trip to Antarctica, Patagonia and Mendoza; all of which we loved.

In lots of ways, Buenos Aires is a gateway for many of us visiting Argentina and beyond. Though, don;’t be fooled into thinking that’s all Buenos Aires offers. The city is a destination in itself.

So, to help you get the most out of your time in the city, I’m sharing the top places in Buenos Aires that I really think you shouldn’t miss. Oh, and pop us a message anytime if you need any advice – we love Argentia so much.

1.) San Telmo Market 

San Telmo Market is one area in Buenos Aires we didn’t visit on our first trip to the city. That in itself was a mistake. Thankfully, we remedied this on our most recent trip and loved it.

Open every day, San Telmo Market is a hive of activity and a place you really should visit hungry. You see, once inside, you’ll get to wander around the vast amount of stalls, eateries and kerbside takeaways that are all so delicious. Honestly, you can buy any and every type of food inside San Telmo Market.

We loved Beba Cocina for its delicious empanadas and Argentinian steaks. Like most places within San Telmo Market, it’s unfussy and packed full of people and a bustling atmosphere.

Just a heads up, on a hot summer day, it can get quite warm inside. Humitidy, hundreds of stalls cooking and thousands of people are a combination that will induce buckets of sweat.

Also, to make things nice and easy to get around, book this hop-on-hop-off bus ticket for Buenos Aires. This way, you can avoid all the stress of getting to the main sights and focus on making the most out of your time in the city.

2.) La Boca 

Traditionally a working-class area of Buenos Aires, the colourful neighbourhood of La Boca is well worth a visit. In fact, I’d say it’s one of the best things to do in Buenos Aires if you’re wanting to explore the city’s unique neighbourhoods.

Nowadays, La Boca is a hive of activity and attracts visitors from all over the world. This means you should expect some crowds, especially on the weekends.

Once here, make sure to wander the colourful streets around Caminito and stop by some of the stalls and outdoor foodie spots for a bite to eat.

Make sure to stop by El Gran Paraiso for one of their Choripán. It’s a delicious asado sandwich that’s filled with flame-grilled sausage and served on freshly baked bread. These are typically crusty rolls and they’re so good.

3.) El Ateneo Grand Splendid

Probably one of the world’s most famous bookshops, El Ateneo Grand Splendid is pretty amazing to visit. You see, not only do they have mountains of books (most are in Spanish) but it’s also housed in a historic theatre that’s just so impressive to see.

Take a wander around El Ateneo Grand Splendid, explore the different levels and hop onto the stage for a coffee. It’s so unique.

Afterwards, head down to El Cuartito for some of their iconic pizza. You see, Italian immigrants to Argentina brought lots of flavours from home, and El Cuartito serves some of the best. Make sure to try their Fugazzetta (onion and cheese stuffed pizza. Just be prepared for crowds; this place is always busy.

4.) National Congress building

As you walk around Buenos Aires, be sure to stop by Plaza del Congreso. It’s one of the best things to do in Buenos Aires if you want to explore some of Argentina’s history. You see, at this plaza, you have the National Congress Building that offers free tours that are pretty impressive to see.

Not only that, you’ll get to see Palácio Barolo where you can join another tour (with a small fee) which will take you all through the palace. Not only that but during some evening tours, you’ll be able to scale the lighthouse and see the lights shine over Buenos Aires.

If you’re short on time, book this 3-hour small group tour of Buenos Aires. It’s an incredible way to maximise your time in Buenos Aires and the guide is so much fun.

5.) Plaza de Mayo (Casa Rosada)

Carrying on down Avenue De Mayo (from Plaza del Congreso) you’ll reach Plaza de Mayo and Casa Rosada. The latter is a vast pastel pink house that was once the customs house for Buenos Aires. It’s lovely to see and there’s heaps to do around this area, too.

Once here, make sure to visit the Museo del Bicentenario which is a history museum that showcases the long history of modern-day Argentina.

Also, don’t forget to pop into Buenos Aires Metropolitan Cathedral that’s on the plaza, too. This was the former seat of Pope Francis and has a history that dates back centuries. Honestly, from the outside, the cathedral doesn’t look too impressive; but the inside is just beautiful and well worth a wander around.

6.) La Floralis Genérica

One great thing about Buenos Aires is that it has loads of green spaces that are so lovely for a stroll. Nestled in the Recoleta area of the city, La Floralis Genérica is one stunning sculpture you can’t miss.

You see, this huge flower was gifted to Buenos Aires by Eduardo Catalano and is so impressive to see. Now, what makes La Floralis Genérica special is that it moves depending on the time of day you visit. The huge petals open and close depending on weather conditions and ‘sleep’ at night when the flower closes.

It’s one of the best things to do in Buenos Aires if you’re looking for a relaxing stroll and easily partnered with a trip to nearby the National Museum of Bellas Artes. Though, a heads up, the National Museum of Bellas Artes is huge and it’s well worth giving yourself at least 2 hours to stroll through.

7.) Casa Mínima

Often missed by lots of visitors to Buenos Aires, Casa Mínima is a tiny little home whose width is only a few metres. Well, 2.5 to be exact.

Built back in the 1800s. Casa Mínima is Buenos Aires’ narrowest house. Although small, this type of house was commonplace in Buenos Aires a few centuries ago.

You see, they were often given to freed, enslaved people, by their former masters. These houses typically were attached to the sides of their former master’s homes, with Casa Mínima being the only one left in all of Buenos Aires.

Once here, head inside and learn more about the awful history of slavery and how small houses like this once covered Buenos Aires. After all, I always feel we must understand and continue to learn about the horrors of the past, so we don’t make the same mistakes in the future.

8.) Recoleta Cemetery 

Now, it’s not often I say to visit a cemetery when visiting a new city; but Recoleta Cemetry is well worth a visit. You see, this cemetery is the final resting place of many iconic figures in history.

Once here, take a wander around the mausoleums and see the Tomb Of Eva Perón. To make things easier, this point is the exact place of her tomb on Google Maps. 

Afterwards, you can see the mausoleums of Domingo Faustino Sarmiento, Bartolomé Mitre and so many more. A visit takes around 20 minutes and is easily included when you’re already strolling around Recoleta.

Getting peckish? Head on over (by taxi or Uber) to ) Pizzería Güerrin. It’s one of the best things to do in Buenos Aires if you want to try some authentic Argentinian pizza. Trust me, it’s a thing and it’s so delicious. Just be aware, that Pizzería Güerrin is always busy.

You’ll love every bite, as long as you’re prepared for crowds and its unfussy atmosphere at lunchtime.

9.) Colon Theatre (Plaza Lavalle)

Now, even if you’re not into opera or ballet, you need to visit the Colon Theatre. Nestled on the edges of Plaza Lavalle, it’s one of South America’s most iconic theatres.

Of course, you can book tickets to an opera (tickets range from around £5-100) but they do fill up fast. Alternatively, as we did, we joined an English language tour of Colon Theatre that lasted around 45 minutes.

Just be sure to book your tickets on their website before arriving (at least a day before) to get the best times.

Once inside, you’ll get to explore the grand hallways, visit the theatre itself and learn more about the history of this impressive building. Just make sure to keep your eyes peeled for the ‘widows seats’ that are hidden away behind metal grids. During mourning (after a death), widows were not allowed to be seen in public and had to be hidden from view for up to 2 years. Thankfully, all that’s changed but you can see these areas within the theatre itself.

We loved our visit and it’s easily one of the best things to do in Buenos Aires when visiting Plaza Lavalle.

10.) Parque Tres de Febrero (Bosques de Palermo)

If you’re looking for a chilled-out day in the Palermo district of Buenos Aires, then head over to Parque Tres de Febrero. It’s one of the best public parks in Buenos Aires and so lovely on a sunny day in the city.

Once here, take a stroll around the lake, and the vast rose garden and visit the Japanese Garden that’s just off Germany Square. The latter is a gifted park from Germany and well worth visiting.

11.) Don Julio

Regularly touted and awarded as one of the best places for steak in the world, Don Julio is something of an institution; and not just in Buenos Aires. You see, Don Julio is known the world over for its delicious steaks and is well worth visiting for lunch or dinner when in Buenos Aires.

Now, getting a reservation can be tough and we’ve heard stories of people waiting up to four hours for a table. Thankfully, this didn’t happen to us and I’ll tell you how we managed that.

If you’re going for dinner, start queuing at 5:20-5:30 pm at the latest. This way, you’ll be at the front of the queue to get your name on the ‘Waiting List’. We were about 40th in the queue, which started moving around 5:45 pm. Once we got to the front, we were given a time of 20:45 for dinner and just had to show up at that time. We left, went back to the hotel and got ready for dinner. In all, I think we queued for 20 minutes.

However, always be prepared for a long queue. Thankfully, Don Julio is aware of how bad their queues can be; so they give out free sparkling wines and freshly-baked empanadas whilst you wait.

It really is one of the best things to do in Buenos Aires, especially when looking for a world-renowned steak.

12.) Argentine Tango

Tango is something of an institution in Argentina, and one experience you don’t want to miss when visiting Buenos Aires.

Now, there are a few options for Tango Shows or Tango Halls, where locals and visitors go to dance. We’ve done both and loved each of them; for very different reasons.

Now, there are a few options when booking a Tango Show in Buenos Aires and it can all be a little confusing. This is especially true when you’re trying to find the best one!

We chose Almacen, which is housed in a centuries-old building in the heart of Buenos Aires. We loved it as it’s much smaller and cosier than the big-hitting style shows and a little less glossy (if that makes sense). It felt very authentic and the dancers were just so talented. Plus, the whole team are so friendly.

Now, you can book dinner and a show at Almacen if you want. We tried the food, and although it was good, I wouldn’t rush back for the restaurant element. So, save yourself a little time and book the show ticket itself. It’s just so incredible and in a historic, cosy hall.

If you want to visit a traditional tango hall, then book this tour where you can attend a local milongas with an actual Tango guide. These typically aren’t flashy or glitzy but so authentic and lovely. We spent about 3 hours in the traditional milongas and all the locals were so friendly. We had so much fun.

13.) National Museum of Fine Arts

The National Museum of Fine Arts is an incredible place to visit. In fact, I’d go as far as saying that it’s one of the best things to do in Buenos Aires if you love art history. You see, is a treasure trove of exhibitions from some of the world’s most prestigious artists.

Once inside, you’ll get to see works from the likes of Goya, Van Gogh, Chagall and so many more. It’s incredible and you can easily spend 3 hours inside without even seeing everything.

Not only that, you can easily explore the museum after visiting Recoleta Cemetery. After all, it’s only about a 10-minute stroll away.

14.) La Cocina

Hungry? Hop in an Uber or taxi and visit La Cocina which makes some of the tastiest (and fresh-to-order) empanadas in all of Buenos Aires.

Now, a heads up, this place is tiny and unfussy but it’s so worth visiting for a bite around lunchtime. Oh, and don’t forget to try their locro soup. It’s so good.

15.) Basilica of the Blessed Sacrament 

Built at the start of the 1900s, the Basilica of the Blessed Sacrament is a stunning church to see whilst in Buenos Aires. Not only is the church beautiful to see, but it’s also just off Plaza General San Martín where you can see the Monument to the Fallen in Malvinas and the huge Clock Tower that was gifted by Britain back in 1916.

After working up an appetite, hop in a cab and visit Café Tortoni that’s about 9 minutes away. This is one of Buenos Aires’s most famous cafes and has been around since the 1800s. Over the years, it’s had presidents, actors and other iconic folk visit for a coffee or medialunas. They even have live music or tango performances on certain days. Though, a heads up, we had to queue for about 45 minutes to get a table; it’s always busy.

16.) Tigre Municipal Museum of Fine Art (Tigre Club)

Attentively, if you want to explore more of the city’s stunning buildings and institutions, then head over to the Tigre Municipal Museum of Fine Art (MAT). Here, you’ll get to explore the incredible exhibitions and also take a wander around the stunning building that is the Tigre Club which is beautiful.

Now, the Tigre Club is a little away from the downtown area of Buenos Aires (about 45 minutes in a cab), but it’s well worth visiting for an afternoon trip. It really is one of the best things to do in Buenos Aires.

Firefall Viewing Areas

The only designated location to view Firefall is just east of the El Capitan Picnic Area. It’s marked and easy to find. Plus, most likely, you’ll see other people.

That’s the furthest south/west you’ll want to go before seeing too much of the face. You see more of the waterfall from the main area or a more dramatic angle and fewer crowds slightly north/east of it, but this is all up to your personal preference.

We went here on the first day, then stopped at an alternate spot for our second day to get a different vantage point. In past years, people found any spot they could in the valley, which led to collapsed river banks and trampled meadows.

I was afraid of the crowds, but going mid-February on a weekday, I was pleasantly surprised to find it less crowded than the videos I’ve seen.

We were the first set of photographers to arrive at 3 PM on the first day. By 5 PM, there were 200+ people. The ranger told us weekends are at least 6x more crowded, with President’s Day weekend being the busiest. The second day, we arrived around 4:15 PM and still found a spot we liked.

There’s still plenty of space to shoot since we’re all shooting up with a long lens. People shoot from both sides of the road.
