Big Sur, California

One of my favorite glamping destinations in the USA, these ancient forests have long been a retreat for generations of writers and artists. This rugged coastline, running from San Simeon to Carmel, is full of 1,2000-foot cliffs and towing redwoods.

Spend your afternoons wandering through the eucalyptus forests and splashing in the ocean, then get off your feet for a much-needed treatment in some of California’s best spas.

For a true retreat, book your stay at Ventana Big Sur.

As a note, If you’re coming from San Francisco, Big Sur is a no-brainer and a popular place to road trip to.

The trip from San Francisco south to Big Sur is about three hours in total; however, I’d highly recommend making a stop in Monterey (about two hours from San Francisco). In this case, the journey is just as incredible as the destination.

My recommendation: Start early to get to Pebble Beach. From here, you can explore the famous 17-Mile Drive for some of the most beautiful landscapes in the United States. Be sure to check out the iconic Lone Cypress at Pebble Beach! From Monterey to Big Sur, it’s only about an hour’s drive.

Tip: Before you arrive at Big Sur, check out the Esalen Institute to look at their program options and public hours. They’ve also got a 6,000-year-old cliff-side hot spring that you’ve got to experience.
